I took the photo of this little boy in Charleston, SC in 1983. He was on the playground w his buddies. I have no idea who he is. The determination and strength of his face has haunted me for years. His look was so open and has knowledge of self. Still today I feel optimistic about the world and our cultures co-existing when I look at this face.
He is got the world, which is split in two, in his grip & he will mend it. He rests on top of the first members of the US Congress. They are supported by a family photo of Harriet Tubman''s children. Harriet is on the far left. I grew up really disliking some white people. Some I share blood with, some who raised me, some were the community who raised me. The collaged picture of the WASP debutantes over an actual boat captains diagram of how to pack a slave ship represents my disgust. It also shows the knowledge the little boy has of himself and the strength & determination of his heritage & community. I suppose some may see that I am creating more separation by shaming out whites, but is this not an accurate story? I cant speak more on the shaming, my intention was to not shame out, but to acknowledge the persistence of the human spirit through adversity. I wish I'd taken this little boys name all those years ago. I have been in love with his spirit since I met him. |
